About Me:
Jasmine Roddy

In June 2015, I was preparing for the end of a 14-year US Navy career when my father unexpectedly passed away. As the oldest child and next of kin, I was responsible for making all decisions and handling funeral arrangements. As a single mother in the midst of a career transition, I was unprepared for this financial burden.

This interrupted my grieving process because I had no time to mourn; I was consumed by anger. I felt anger towards my father for his irresponsibility causing his own death, as well as his irresponsibility in managing his affairs and not setting up life insurance to alleviate the burden that fell on me. I was further frustrated by my inability to express this anger to him and show him how his inaction impacted my life.

If he did have a policy, we couldn't find it and no one was aware of its existence. There is no comprehensive online database for existing life insurance policies, but maybe there should be.

Between last-minute plane tickets from Texas to California for myself and my daughters, along with other expenses related to my father's death and memorial services, my little savings intended for post-military life evaporated. I even resorted to taking out a loan to cover some of the costs.

Becoming Jasmine Roddy - That Insurance Chick

After leaving the military six months later, I enrolled in school to pursue a degree in marketing. During my last couple of years in the Navy I had been moonlighting as a social media marketer, which I thoroughly enjoyed. However, after a year, I decided to try one of the jobs on my bucket list.

I know it sounds crazy, but I've always had a list of jobs I really wanted to try, even if only temporarily. Having only experienced military life,  I really wanted to experience something different. One of the jobs on my bucket list was sales. I'd always wanted to try sales, but I knew I would suck at it. Trying to convince someone to buy something after they said no sounds a lot like begging. I decided to tackle it first to get it out of the way.

As I searched for sales positions I found a lot of listings for life insurance agents. This wasn't the type of sales role I envisioned when I started my search; I was thinking something more along the lines of software sales. It dawned on me that my past searches related to life insurance following my father's passing had influenced these results.

Then I stumbled upon a listing for an independent insurance broker. Although it was commission-based, they offered to cover the cost of my licensing course. I thought, why not? I'd at least gain a little more knowledge if it didn't work out. They say success in sales hinges on passion for what you're selling, and after my father's passing, I was deeply passionate about life insurance.

Following my father's death, I delved into understanding life insurance and its importance, and realized many others lacked this knowledge. I was eager to share what I had learned and help educate others on the subject.
