Insurance is a risk management tool. It protects your assets by reducing your financial risk in the event of any unforeseen circumstances that may damage or destroy them.
You’ve invested a lot of money in your house, car, and all the cool technology you may own, right? If there was an accident and you lost them all, how would you feel? Having an insurance policy allows you to rest easy knowing that even if that were to happen, you’d get the money to fix or repurchase those items again. Obviously with life insurance, your family isn't going to be able to go to the store to purchase another you when you pass away. When it comes to life insurance you are the asset, but instead of getting a policy to protect yourself medically when you are sick or hurt (like health insurance) the policy is in place to protect your family financially from the loss of you, when you pass away.
Insurance policies usually have a specified time period, called a policy term. You are responsible for paying the fee; also called a premium, to cover the term of that policy and when that term is over, you will either renew the policy you have or purchase a new one.
There are many different types of insurance, but here on ThatInsuranceChick.com I'm only going to focus on the ones I work with. Life Insurance, Health Insurance, Dental Insurance, and Medicare Insurance. These are the most important types of insurance in my opinion because they focus on the assets you value the most - your health, your loved ones and your financial well-being.
Life Insurance - Pays someone you select as a beneficiary a set amount of money when you die. The most common reasons for this type of policy is to help your family afford to bury you, and allow them to continue paying living expenses after the loss of your income.
Health Insurance – Helps lower the price you pay when going to the hospital, doctor’s appointment, and medication you may be prescribed after those visits.
Medicare Insurance – This is also health insurance, but it’s a federal health insurance program for people 65 or older, and some younger people with disabilities.
Dental Insurance – You may think Dental insurance is included with health insurance, but it’s not. However; It does do the same thing as health insurance. It lowers the price you pay when you go to the dentist.
Important Note:
Insurance regulations vary by state. It's important to discuss your options with an agent/broker who is licensed in your state instead of just applying for policies online without knowing the requirements for approval with that company. Being declined for an insurance policy can negatively affect your chances of being approved somewhere else. An independent broker is contracted with multiple companies which allows them to shop around to find the policy within your budget that you'd most likely to be approved for.
One size does not fit all. It is imperative that the agent representing the company you are getting your policy from assesses your individual needs, goals and financial situation. This requires a meeting over the phone, zoom (or some other online platform) or even in person.
Just because you heard your neighbor Mrs. Jones bragging about how she was able to get a $1 million dollar life insurance policy for only $30/month does not mean you will get the same policy for that same price if you were to go to the same company. Mrs. Jones' policy might not even be a good enough policy for you.
Your insurance agent should prioritize making sure that you not only find great coverage but that you find the RIGHT coverage for you and your family, and that you can afford it now and for as long as you need to make payments for the life of the policy.
Your insurance agent will be someone you continue to talk to over time. When you have major life changes that may or may not have an effect on your insurance coverage or even require you to purchase more. They will be available to answer questions you may have about your insurance, or tell you how to go about filing claims. A good life insurance agent will usually help prepare the claim for your family so they can grieve with no worries.
